How Nether coordinates work
Every block you walk in the Nether covers 8 blocks in the Overworld, on the X and Z axes. So to find where a portal should go in the Nether, divide your Overworld X and Z by 8. Going the other way, multiply by 8. Y (height) is not scaled.
That's also why Nether highways are the fastest way to travel long distances: 1,000 blocks in the Nether is 8,000 at home.
How to link two portals
- Press F3 (Java) or turn on Show Coordinates (Bedrock) and stand in your Overworld portal. Note X, Y and Z.
- Enter them above and read the Nether coordinates.
- Go through, travel to those coordinates in the Nether, and build a new portal there.
- Light it and go back through. You should come out at your original portal.
Portal sending you to the wrong place?
A portal links to the nearest portal on the other side, so two Overworld portals built close together can share one Nether portal. Build the Nether side at the exact converted spot, and keep your Overworld portals well apart. Want a round build to go around it? Try the Minecraft circle generator.
