Dead pixel test: check your monitor

Fill your screen with solid colours to spot dead and stuck pixels on a new monitor.

Hardware

Pick a colour to fill the screen. Click or press → for the next colour, ← to go back, Esc to finish.

How to check for dead pixels

  1. Clean the screen first, so dust isn't mistaken for a pixel.
  2. Start the full screen test and look slowly across the whole screen on each colour, from about 30 cm away.
  3. Pay attention to the edges and corners, where it's easy to miss one.
  4. Found one? Note the colour it showed up on and roughly where it is.

Dead, stuck or hot?

  • Dead pixel: always black. Easiest to see on the white screen.
  • Stuck pixel: always one colour (red, green or blue). Shows on black and on the other colours.
  • Hot pixel: always white or bright. Easiest to see on the black screen.

What to do next

Test a new monitor as soon as it arrives: most shops and brands have a return window or a pixel policy, and the clock starts on delivery. Stuck pixels sometimes clear up on their own after a few days of normal use. Dead pixels usually don't.

While you're checking the monitor, make sure it runs at full speed with the refresh rate test.
