How to test your mouse for double clicking
Click the box slowly, one press at a time, about once a second, for 20 to 30 clicks with each button. A healthy mouse shows one click per press. If two presses show up less than 80 ms apart when you only pressed once, the switch is "chattering".
80 ms is a sensible default: it's faster than almost anyone can double-click on purpose. Switch to 50 ms if you're a fast clicker, or 120 ms to catch milder faults.
Why mice start double clicking
Most mice use mechanical switches with a metal contact inside. As it wears, it can bounce and register two contacts for one press. Dust, moisture and static build-up make it worse. In games it shows up as weapons firing twice, items dropping, or a jump you didn't press.
How to fix it
- Blow compressed air around the button and click it firmly a few dozen times.
- Check the mouse software for a "debounce time" setting and raise it a little.
- Under warranty? Most brands replace a double-clicking mouse.
- A faulty switch also inflates your CPS test score, so test here first.
